Over the last few weeks, the construction industry has risen to the challenge of these extraordinary times, whether mobilising to deliver the new emergency Nightingale Hospitals in record time, or through the donations of PPE and other vital supplies to courageous and dedicated front line workers. The sector’s importance was reaffirmed by the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy – the RT Hon Alok Sharma, in an open letter (link) recognising the significant role construction continues to play to the resilience of the UK.

At ISG, our approach remains focused on the health and wellbeing of our employees, supply chain partners, clients and the communities that we serve. Decisions to keep sites operational have been informed by the Construction Leadership Council’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and driven by a rigorous examination of individual site infrastructure and status, staffing levels, operational requirements, as well as safe travelling arrangements for personnel.

Some of our projects could not reach these enhanced levels of compliance and remain closed, however there has been an extraordinary effort by our teams, supply chain partners and clients to develop innovative solutions to safely keep sites operational. This ingenuity and sense of purpose to keep our industry moving forward, safely sustaining jobs and livelihoods and supporting our customers is a significant achievement.

These are incredibly challenging times for everyone, but as our industry comes together to support, share knowledge and best practice on dealing with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, we must recognise the extraordinary efforts of our people to navigate the complexities of this new normal to keep us all moving forward.
