From a former Grade II listed warehouse into a magnificent 58,000 sq ft haven of sophisticated glamour, ISG transformed Devonshire Club. Set in Devonshire Square, its location is ideal for busy City workers in the square mile. With 68-bedrooms and all of the associated facilities you would expect a luxury members club to have, the detail and craftsmanship involved in the fit out of this project is second to none.

The project

The location of Devonshire Club meant careful noise management was needed to minimise disruption to residents and local businesses. The club sits just five metres above a busy tube line, and before any works could take place, a condition survey had to be conducted to inspect the stability of the tunnel. Its Grade II listed status meant works had to be contained within the existing interior, so bespoke protective screens were installed to the lower level exterior façade to protect it for the duration of the project. The lawn area of the inside-outside garden had ‘undisturbed’ land beneath it, and required piling to check for unexploded bombs from the Second World War. An archaeologist was sent to monitor the process on the square of greenery – thankfully nothing untoward was discovered.

Phase one involved the strip out and modification of the six-storey warehouse, previously used as commercial office space.

The internal layout was then reconfigured to optimise the space, with structural operations undertaken to allow ISG to form new lift cores and service risers in both buildings. The creation of more leisure facilities; a club lounge, brasserie, library, private dining and meeting rooms, gymnasium, garden area and support office space, began in the adjacent three-storey townhouse. A unique glass bridge was built to link the two buildings and a circa 1,000 sq ft inside-outside garden extension added to the rear of the property to provide an elegant space for members all year round.
